Oh Butterfly

(Rachel Hamilton)
“Oh, Butterfly” is a wonderful song about nature. The song actually has a two-fold meaning: it is a song based on a wonderful day in nature I had with my mom and my sister, and it is a song about people who have come in and out of my life.
On that day in nature with my sister and my mom, the butterfly teased us for hours. My sister was trying to get a picture of the butterfly, and it just wouldn’t sit still. It would sit long enough for us to think we would be successful, and then it would move again. When my sister did get the picture, it was a beautiful thing.
The second meaning of this song is about some people I have known in my life. You work at getting to know them and want to create a relationship, but they are just too busy. They flutter around and look real impressive when, in fact, they are just getting further and further away from what is real. Some people are very good at flirting and giving big hopes and dreams. Then they just fly away, leaving you both to wonder what might have been. The true beauty is in the mystery. You will never really know the person. As a result, you can just admire from a distance, and the picture can remain with you for a lifetime. This picture can be a comfort to you at difficult times in your life, and maybe that is all this relationship was ever meant to be.
“Oh, Butterfly” is about remembering the smile, the laughter, and the joy—letting the mystery live on. The truth is, if you got to know this person too well, you would realize they have all the same human traits as you do. When that is the case, it is a bit more challenging to find the beauty. So, thank you to all my butterflies who have blessed me with their beauty.
Oh, Butterfly

I can see that she is beautiful as she quickly passes by.
It is clear that she is born to fly.
To me, she is a great mystery.
Perhaps that is how it is meant to be.

So many times I wish to touch,
but if I did, would it mean as much?
She is elusive—just has no time to stay,
but it is her mystery that takes my breath away.

Oh, my butterfly
Oh, my beautiful butterfly
You bring joy to my eyes
Oh, butterfly

When I see her, I always have to smile.
Sometimes, she will even hang around for a short while.
She always sits where I can clearly see.
Her presence and her beauty always grace me.

In my darkest moments, when I am full of doubt,
she flies by and draws my sadness out.
She never stays long enough for me to touch.
Perhaps, without the mystery, it wouldn’t mean so much.

Oh, my butterfly
Oh, my beautiful butterfly
You bring joy to my eyes
Oh, butterfly

So stop worrying about what tomorrow will bring.
Find a reason today to let your heart sing,
for there is beauty in this moment. Trust, and you will see.
The greatest gift of all is in the mystery!
